Up the Inside Passage

Apr 9, 2023 | Fishboat at Sea

If you’re keen on maritime history, wooden boats, and have had the chance to view the first of our Shipwright Sessions videos, you may or may not recognize the vessel being worked on therein by Brad Seamans of the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-Op – The F/V Polaris. A storied 100+ year old Halibut Schooner built and maintained right here in Washington State, the Polaris, captained by Brian Dafforn, was hauled out for annual maintenance at the Port Townsend Boatyard and happened to be undergoing caulking work when the Fishboat Media team arrived to roll cameras.

Drawn in part to the idea of a career in commercial fishing after viewing archival film footage of the Polaris as a child, Captain Dafforn, seeing the potential for paying that inspiration forward, unexpectedly and graciously extended an invitation for our team to join him aboard the Polaris to document its annual journey up the Inside Passage to Ketchikan, Alaska in preparation for the upcoming Black Cod and Halibut seasons. Accepting enthusiastically, we did just that. And what a trip it was!
